On March 6, our Energy and Environment instructor explained our culminating project for the class. He told us that we all have the capacity to develop something new and life-changing. I began brainstorming sources of kinetic energy that could be harnessed to do something useful. I thought about regions that have a rainy season and how all that water could be used for something useful. I wondered about downspout generators. Could a person power lights by the movement of water in a downspout or similar pipe? Then I began to think specifically about Haiti. I have taken one trip to the island of La Gonave in the bay of Haiti and plan to go again this June. Is there a practical way to provide renewable energy in Haiti?
